Mtsoaki’s Story

Mtsoaki's life has changed for the better thanks the work we do in South Africa.

Mtsoaki, 12, bears the burden of caring for her four year old sister and 16 month old brother because her mother is too sick to care for them. Mtsoaki explains what life was like for her: “My mum being sick has badly affected my schoolwork. I find it hard to concentrate on my studies because I’m worried about my mum, what she eats and does when we’re not there. Sometimes I stay home from school to look after her. She sometimes feels pain in her eyes, sometimes in her legs. It breaks my heart.”

We’re supporting Mtsoaki and her siblings through our local Child Care forum. A support network, medicine and food, and recreational activities means they can just be children. Mtsoaki now looks forward to a brighter future. “My life has changed for the better. I can play with other children and attend school every day. At school, the subjects I enjoy are Sesotho, Afrikaans and maths. After lessons, we eat. I want to be a teacher so I can teach children who haven’t had the opportunity to go to school.”

Child Protection

Child Protection

South Africa is marked by high levels of violence and exploitation of children in places where they should be safe. All children should thrive in a safe environment.

Health & Nutrition

Health & Nutrition

No child under the age of 5 should die from preventable disease and all our children deserve long-term good health.

Children's Rights

Children's Rights

Insufficient resources prevent children from achieving their rights as enshrined in the South African Constitution. We are campaigning for a strengthened child-rights system.
